Suffolk EfW Facility

The £180M state of the art Energy from Waste facility (EfW) can process 269,000 tonnes of waste per year and provide 30MW of electricity, enough to power 30,000 households. The residual municipal solid waste and commercial and industrial waste will be treated following recycling and composting.

Suffolk County Council wanted a cheaper, greener alternative to landfill and commissioned SITA UK to build and run an energy-from-waste facility. Charles Brand was appointed as the lead Design and Build contractor of the Suffolk EfW project along with CNIM as JV partner.

After nearly four years of construction, and 1.6million hours worked the project was handed over on time and within budget. The facility is designed to meet exceptionally high standards in operation. The building also provides community facilities to enhance education and understanding of the role of waste management.

During construction the site recycled 90% of its waster overall, 15% higher that the required rate. Following a number of high-scoring inspections, the site was judged as one of the best run building sites in the country under the Considerate Constructors Scheme and also achieved a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating, making it one of the greenest industrial buildings in the country.

The building went on to achieve BREEAM ‘outstanding’ rating from the leading international assessors. Over two million buildings, in over 70 countries, have been assessed with less than 2% achieving the outstanding rating.

“Initially the concept of achieving BREEAM ‘Excellence’ was an inspiration which everyone worked towards and would have been proud of. However not only did we meet the ‘Excellent’ requirement we went on to excel and achieve the highest category of ‘Outstanding’. I feel immensely grateful to all those involved in securing the BREEAM accreditation.”
