Wood Pellet Biomass Plant successfully completed!

02 Oct 2012

Lagan Construction Group was awarded this £2.8 million Wood Pellet Biomass Plant contract by Land Energy in July 2011. The 12 month contract can produce wood chip pellets, produce its own power and will also sell power to the national grid.

The works consisted of an onsite biomass combined heat and power plant to supply process heat and electricity to the new wood pellet factory, using the UK’s first power generating turbine using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology from industry leaders Turboden.

The plant will be able to supply enough wood pellets for the equivalent of up to 10,000 homes, with sufficient energy for their heating and hot water needs.

The plant is capable of producing up to 2 Mega Watts of power. In order to produce their own power, they will process the waste from the logs they use to produce the pellets from. The timber that will be used in the production process will be sourced locally from Scottish commercial forestry, ensuring the sustainability of this source of renewable energy. The waste Bi-product is separated and burnt in a large incinerator and in turn this will generate electricity. Any additional electricity will be sold to the national grid. This Biomass Plant is the first of its kind in the UK.
