Work starts to create 4,000 new Jobs

08 Sep 2014

Construction work has started to create job opportunities for up to 4,000 people on land owned by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The work is being carried out on the infrastructure which will open up a major development site at Capitol Park in Goole acting as a catalyst for economic growth creating 116,000 square metres of factories and warehouses to the west of the port.

The HCA which is investing up to £8 million at the site over the next two years, with support from the European Regional Development Fund, has appointed Lagan Construction Group to build a new 1 kilometre road and associated drainage works.

“The start of work on the new road is fantastic news for the local economy – it will help create employment for the town and the wider community for many years to come. This 40 hectare site will provide a range of opportunities for companies to locate in Goole with excellent connections to the Port and the motorway network. We will continue to invest in Capitol Park for the next 5 years working with our partners to help create sustainable jobs for local people.”
Rob Pearson, Head of Area at the Homes and Communities Agency
“This is a potentially transformative project for the town and for the local economy. Thanks to funding from ERDF and the government via the Homes and Communities Agency, this long awaited project is now commencing, with the potential to create thousands of new jobs. This has been a very long process and one I have been pushing hard on. I wish to pay particular tribute to Rob Pearson and this team at the Homes and Communities Agency who came to the rescue at a critical time and have made this project happen. Goole people need this road and the jobs that will be created as a result of the opening up of Capitol Park. I will continue to work with the HCA and others to attract businesses to this site.”
Andrew Percy MP, Member of Parliament for Brigg & Goole

The work, which will take 16 months to complete, will mean that Lagan Construction Group will work with local businesses wherever possible.

“We are delighted to be close to commencing works on the ground as we are currently progressing the design for the Capitol Park Spine Road Phase 2 project and will be breaking ground early in October. Lagan Construction Group looks forward to working with and delivering a successful project for our client, HCA for what is a key project for our business.”
Gavin McKevitt, Regional Director for Scotland and Northern England, at Lagan Construction Group
“Creating the necessary transport infrastructure to support economic regeneration is a top priority for this authority. The development of an access road to Capitol Park is a landmark moment for Goole and is something that this council, alongside our partners at the Homes and Communities Agency, have strived for. The new access road is the final piece of the jigsaw, creating a continuous route from the docks to Capitol Park to the M62. It will open up a large area of the town for potential development, helping to secure investment, create jobs and regenerate Goole for the benefit of its residents.”
Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council
“Work starting on site is not just great news for Goole, with huge potential for new jobs created by opening up the development land and creating better links between the port and the M62, but for the connectivity of the Humber as a whole adding to the ports and logistics offer in the region. This investment from the HCA and ERDF creating better links from Capitol Business Park to Goole, the UK’s most inland port, makes an even more attractive proposition for businesses to invest in the region.”
